Details:
The State of Emergency declared on 3 March 1959 was a turning point in the struggle for liberation in Malawi. In this book, historians from Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Britain and North America come together with key participants in the Emergency to throw new light on the events of 1959-60 and on their continuing legacy. By focusing on local case studies, several contributors extend their analysis beyond broad generalities related to the activities of elite politicians to demonstrate the involvement of more marginal groups including peasant farmers, civil servants and women. Other contributors situate Nyasaland’s State of Emergency within a wider regional and imperial context. Just as colonial officials in Nyasaland drew on counter-insurgency strategies pursued elsewhere, so Malawian nationalists were linked in a variety of ways with nationalists in Southern and Northern Rhodesia. Malawi in Crisis also examines the theme of violence which relates both to colonial and nationalist violence and to the various allegations and counter-allegations made by contemporary politicians and observers. Another set of chapters explore the contrasting legacies of the Emergency both at a national level, as experienced in the annual celebration of Martyr’s Day and, more informally, at the level of the village and in song. The final theme concerns the long-term significance of the Emergency for the evolution of Malawi’s political culture. This is a book which should be of interest to all who seek a historical and political understanding of the way contemporary Malawi is evolving, and the influence it is having on its neighbours in Central Africa. It is a scholarly generated work that is likely to be of interest to teachers, students, political and civil leaders, and friends of Malawi at home and abroad.
