Master of Science Degree in Applied Chemistry

This is a post-graduate programme intended to produce graduates conversant with scientific principles underlying the industrial production of useful chemicals and thus prepare them for a career in the chemical allied industries where Applied Chemistry forms an integral part of the development. The programme also aims at encouraging the establishment of entrepreneurial activities such as small-scale chemical manufacture. The duration of the programme is two years, sub-divided into two sections; the first academic year dealing with lectures, tutorials and seminars, and the second, dealing with research and dissertation. The taught course includes General Chemistry, Applied Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, and Business and Management Studies.

Master of Science in Chemistry by Research

The programme is offered to students with a 2/1 B.Sc  (Honours) degree in Chemistry or a B.Sc in Chemistry with credit, with three years experience and/or postgraduate certificates. The areas of Research for the Masters programme include:

a) Chemistry,
b) Environmental chemistry,
c) Water and soil analysis,
d) Nutritional evaluation and quality assessment of indigenous fruits and vegetables, spices, edible gettable oils, oil deeds, roots and tubers
e) Product development and antinutritional factors in foods, and
f) Natural products including extraction and characterisation of essential oils and medicinal plants and herbal medicine.
