 Mr. Anthony Gunde (B.A. English, M.A. Communications)

Lecturer in Communication
Anthony Gunde obtained a first degree in English with a second major in Business Administration (B.A) from Andrews University,Solusi College in Zimbabwe in 1996.
He worked as a Business Reporter for Blantyre Newspapers Limited from 1996-1999 where an interest in news media commenced. From 1999-2001 he studied and obtained an M.A. in Communications from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. Upon completion of his postgraduate studies, Anthony had internships with the conservative media watchdog-Media Research Center and United Way International, both just outside Washington D.C. in Alexandria, VA. After teaching briefly at the Malawi Institute of Journalism in Blantyre, he joined LACS Department in July, 2010. His research interests are in the study of the convergence of New Media and Culture such as the social role of new media technologies and the transformative potential of such developments on society, politics, economics and everyday life.

 Mr. Sydney Kankuzi B.Ed(Unima), BA Hons-Cultural and Media Studies (Natal), MA - Cultural and Media Studies (KwaZulu Natal)

Lecturer in Communication, Media and Cultural Studies
Sydney Kankuzi joined the Language and Communication Department in 1998 after serving as a secondary school English language teacher. During his academic career Kankuzi has served as Head of Department, Acting Deputy Dean of Humanities, Faculty of Humanities representative on Senate, Coordinator of BA Media for Development, and Team Leader of BA Communication and Cultural Studies curriculum development team. He is currently reading for a Ph.D in Journalism Studies at the School of Media, Film and Journalism at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland.

Research Interests:
Media Sociology; Media and Society; Advertising and Culture; Language, Communication and Culture. His Ph.D research project is about Public Service Broadcasting in Malawi.

 Mrs. Stella Ndau (MA in Applied Linguistics (Lancaster) UK, Bachelor of Arts Humanities)

Lecturer in Academic Litracy
Stella Chiripo Ndau holds a BA in English and Drama from Chancellor College and a Masters Degree in Applied Linguistics from Lancaster University. For the past twelve years she has been teaching Language and Communication Skills courses at Chancellor College. Apart from general Language and Communication Skills courses, Stella also teaches a courses titled "Writing and Oral Skills for the Media" which equips Media for development students with appropriate language skills which are key to the upholding of professional standards in the media including broadcasting.
Stella has wide experience in handling training programmes. Since she joined University training Programmes. Since she joined University of Malawi she has facilitated over ten language and Communication Skills short courses and works.
Currently, she is a Communication expert for two international projects on Climate Change Adaptation in Africa which involves the University of Malawi. the university of Dar Es Salam and University of Greenwich, UK.
 

 Mr. Zondiwe Mbano (M.A, BA (English and History), Postgraduate Diploma (Teaching of English) Leeds University - UK, B.Ed (hon.) Language Education Unima, Certificate Education -Management andAdministration)

Lecturer in Academic Literacy
Bruce Zondiwe Mbano studied at Chancellor College, University of Malawi, for BA in English and History, 1977, B.Ed (Hon.) 1994, and MA in Language Education, 2005; at Leeds University, England, for postgraduate Dip. in Teaching English; at Moray House College of Education, Edinburg for Cert. in Educational Management and Admin; and at International Training Institute, Sydney Australia for Cert. in in- service Organisation and Training. He joined the Department of Language and Communication, Chancellor College, in 1999, after teaching English in Secondary Schools, Teachers Colleges and Domasi College of Education. Between 1989 and 1993, before coming to Domasi College of Education where he was head of English Department, he worked for the Malawi Special Teacher education Programme (MASTEP, A World Band/UNDP funded project) as Materials Development Officer. From May to July in 2005, he was awarded the UNESCO's International Fund for the Promotion of Culture (IFPC) for artists' residency at Civitella Castle, Italy, where he wrote poetry. From October 2007 to July 2008, he was attached to Language Centre of University of Glasgow, under the Scotland- Malawi Partnership in Higher Education, where apart form taking a selection of courses in ELT and Educational Research, he wrote a handbook for English Language Skills currently used in the department. The Unsung Song, ( Zomba: Chancellor College Publications , 2003), which he co-edited and has his poems and stories, is a senior secondary school Literature textbook; Beware Millipede (Zomba: Kachere Series, 2007) is his first poetry anthology. His poems have also appeared in Porter, Zimunya and Anyidoho, The Fate of Vultures (BBC collection of winning poetry, Heinemann, 1989), in Nazombe, Haunting Wind ( Blantyre: Dzuka, 1985), and in Nazombe, Operation and tears (Zomba: Kachere, 2005).
His professional and other experiences include:
1. External Examiner for Diploma and Degree English Courses, both Conventional (Residential) and Distance, at Domasi College of Education (Accredited by University of Malawi), from 30th April 2009;
2. Language Task Force (of 3 members), designed English Language Skills curriculum for Lilongwe University of Science and Technology (a new university Government is constructing in the Capital City), September 2007;
3. Centre Supervisor for TOEFL, GRE, and GMAT, international examinations administered by the Educational Testing Services, USA, at University of Malawi, Chancellor College (main centre in the country), 2002 to 2005;
4. Editor of University of Malawi Calendar for 2004/5; final editing of the language, content and presentation of courses, programmes and regulations in all colleges of UNIMA;
5. Expert Judge, monitored and advised a team of curriculum developers working on primary English curriculum, June to July 2004;
6. Monitor/Evaluator of Orientation of key teachers by Ministry of Education methods advisors in a new secondary school English syllabus, August 2002;
7. Chief Examiner in English for both Malawi Certificate Examination, and Primary Teachers' Certificate Examination, 1985 to 1993;
8. Member of Malawi Certificate of Education Syllabus Committee at different times, 1982 to 1998;
9. Member of Malawi Book Development Council, 1996 to 2004;
10. Member of Malawi Writers' Union (MAWU), from 1996, and core facilitator for writers’ workshops for women, youth and other groups;
11. Translator from English to Chitumbuka of main documents for Malawi Vision 2020, a USAID funded project for socio-economic development, 1995 to 1998;
12. Translator, English to Chitumbuka of four children’s books by OUP and Maneno bookshop, 1998;
13. Editor of The Community Link: Newsletter of the Social Mobilization Campaign for Educational Quality, published by SMC-EQ, a USAID funded project, February 1999 to 2004;
14. Co-ordinator of Zomba Action Project, a charity to assist youth, women and elderly, funded by the council and churches in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, from 2007;
15. Church Elder of Church of Central Africa Presbytery (CCAP), (a local denomination bringing together Church of Scotland of Blantyre Synod, Free Church of Scotland of Livingstonia and Lusaka Synods, and Dutch Reformed Church of Nkhoma and Harare Synods), from 1984;
16. Member of Delegation of five who signed a partnership between Zomba CCAP and Igreja Presbiteriana de Africa Central (IPAC), Cuamba and Nampula, Mozambique, September 2004.
 

 Miss. Rachael Chimbwete Phiri (Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics, Bachelor of Arts in Humanities)

Lecturer in Language Communication
Rachel Chimbwete Phiri is a Lecturer in the department of Language and Communication Skills at Chancellor College. She is a holder of MA in Applied Linguistics and a BA Degree in English and Drama from Chancellor College. She has an eight year lecturing experience. She has taught among other courses, Communication, English for Social Sciences, English for Humanities and English for Public Administration. She has also taught and facilitated Language and communication courses for various professionals like: Court interpreters, health workers just to mention a few.
