Welcome to the faculty of Social Science at Chancellor College, University of Malawi. The faculty of Social Science is composed of six (6) major departments which are Economics, History, Psychology, Political and Administrative Studies (PAS), Sociology and Populations Studies plus two centres: Centre for Social research and Centre for Conflict resolution and Management. This is a multidisciplinary faculty which focuses on social science, teaching, research, consulting and outreach in Economics, History, Population Studies, Psychology, Sociology and Political and Administrative Studies. It offers a broad social science degree qualification in these areas. Apart from the department of PAS which offers specialised BA Political Science, BA Public Administration, and BA Human Resource Management, the rest of the departments offer a Bachelor of Social Science majoring in a particular subject such as Economics, Psychology, History etc. The faculty also offers post graduate degrees such as MA in Political Science, MA in Economics, MA in Social History, MA in Sociology, MA in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations. These are offered by specific individual departments. However, the faculty has a faculty-wide Masters in Development Studies and a-soon-to-be launched PhD in Development Studies. There are also PhD programmes in the department of Economics and Sociology. Also available are research degrees at MA and PhD levels in various departments as long as there is appropriate capacity to supervise a chosen research topic.
One other feature of the faculty is that it takes both school leavers straight from Secondary School and mature entry students who can combine work and school. Thus, we have both full time, part-time and weekend programmes to ensure that the needs of various individuals are catered for. It is the aim of the faculty to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country and the Southern Africa region by mounting relevant undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as undertaking basic as well as applied research in areas of need among other activities.
The faculty of social science is one of the strongest faculties in terms of staffing qualification: five (5) full professors, seven (7) Associate Professors and over fifteen (15) doctoral holders (PhD). It has also one of the most impressive record in research and publications which involve published books, book chapters, journal articles and conference proceedings. It is also very active in the areas of consultancies, community outreach and civic engagements for national, public, private and non-governmental organisations in Malawi and beyond.
For specific information regarding programmes which are departmental in nature, I would draw your attention to specific departments in the faculty. As a faculty, we are mindful of the changing political, socio-economic, cultural and technological environment in which we function. We are therefore committed to a constant review of our curricular and modes of delivery of programmes.
You are therefore most welcome to any of our programmes in the faculty.
We look forward to being of value to you personally, to your organisation specifically, and Malawi nation, in general.
Prof. L.B. Dzimbiri
