Master of Arts in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations

The Department of Political and Administrative studies in the Faculty of Social Science at Chancellor College is pleased to invite applications from well qualified candidates for a 2-year programme of study leading to the award of a prestigious Master of Arts (MA) degree in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations.

Programme description and mode of delivery

The MA programme, which commences in August, 2016, shall have two components. The first is course work lasting for one academic year and the other is a year-long supervised research work leading to the production of a thesis. Students shall be required to take a total of eight courses in the first year and these comprise four core courses and four electives. To satisfy this requirement, students will be required to enrol for two courses in every block release once every three months. The eight taught modules will cover ten weeks spread through four residential block release teaching sessions.

Compulsory Courses:

Industrial Relations Theory and Practice, Human Resource Management and Development; Employment Law; Research Methods for Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations.

Optional Courses:

Understanding Organizations and Management Processes, Comparative Industrial Relations, Strategic Planning and Performance Management, Contemporary Issues in Human Resource Management, Human Resource Planning; and Industrial Relations in Malawi.

Admission requirements

Applicants should have a strong Bachelor’s degree (Credit or Pass with 55% and above) in human resource management, industrial relations, general management, public administration and business administration. Applicants who wrote a dissertation at undergraduate level will have added advantage. Those with Journalism, Humanities, and Social Science degrees will be admitted if their undergraduate programme had some human resource management or industrial relations courses and have a minimum of 2 years working experience in management.

Fees

Total fees payable per student for the entire programme (2 years) are as follows:

  • US$7,000.00 for Malawian students (Payable in Malawi Kwacha)

  • US$8,500.00 for foreign students

The fees cover the costs of registration, tuition, supervision, examination, and institutional overheads. Students are expected to meet costs of research, accommodation and meals, medical care, books, stationery and learning materials.

The application package should include the following: one application letter, a detailed CV,a two-page typed brief of their research interests in the area of Human Resource Management or Industrial Relations,certified copies of certificates,original copy of academic transcripts, two copies of academic references in sealed envelopes,three copies of completed application forms (University of Malawi PG1 Form to be requested from the Departmental Secretary through: pastudies@cc.ac.mw; anapplication fee of MK5,000.00 should be paid to the following account details:
