The Department of Economics of the School of Law, Economics and Government at the University of Malawi is inviting government and private sector practitioners, college students and interested individuals to short course training in the following:

In this course, participants will be introduced to economic data management and analysis using household surveys from Malawi

Project Monitoring & Evaluation – practical course using Malawian data

Participants will learn about quasi-experimental/non non-experimental impact evaluation methods in this course. These include – difference-in-difference, matching, interrupted timeseries, regression discontinuity, instrumental variables.

Introduction to Accounting and financial management

In this course, participants will be introduced to financial reporting, the conceptual framework of accounting, the regulatory framework of accounting records, preparing financial statements, and interpretation of financial statements.

Economics for Non-economists

This course targets individuals whose work is affected by decision making regarding resource allocation and choices that require maximizing profit making and maximizing people’s well-being. Among the topics to be covered are (1) thinking like economists, (2) microeconomics, including profit maximization, and (3) macroeconomics (inflation, interest rate and international economic environment.

To be determined preferable weekend starting on a Friday

Budget Analysis (5 days)

Topics to be covered include (1) Understanding the Budget (general budgeting principles, methods and classification), (2) Budget Processes (legal framework, Malawi budget cycle), (3) the Malawi Budget Framework and (4) Budget Analysis (Qualitative and Quantitative methods)

Public Service/ Social Accountability.

This course integrates a Human rights based approach to Budget Analysis. Topics include (1) Introduction to Public Service Monitoring and Social Accountability, (2) Human Right based budgeting, (3) Monitoring Resource Allocation, (4) Monitoring Expenditure Management, (4) Performance Management and (5) Oversight.

Note:

1) Fees for Course for all courses are MK300,00 per participant.

2) For Introduction to Stata, the fee is MK250, 000.

3) For those registered to do Project Monitoring&Evaluation. The course on Introduction to Stata is compulsory BUT participants will only have to pay K50, 000.00 for the Introduction to Stata course.

Method of Registration:

Send your name, address, and bank deposit slip for training fees to the Secretary of the Economics Department at sec.economics@unima.ac.mw or P.O. Box 280, Zomba, Malawi.

Note:

a) Upon completing the course, participants will be given certificates.

b) No campus accommodation will be available for participants. However, the students’ hostels will be available for hire. Or people may use accommodation outside but close to campus. Please get in touch if you need some.

c) The fees will cater for tuition, lunch and refreshments.
