Profile

Dr. Peter Okeno Ong’are is a lecturer in music at The University of Malawi, Chancellor College in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. He obtained his PhD in Music at Durham University, in the United Kingdom. His research title was Music and Reconciliation in the Aftermath of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. It is at the same university where he obtained his Masters in Ethnomusicology. Though he is from Kenya, he did his Honours, Bachelors and Diploma degrees at the North West University in South Africa. At both universities he founded music groups that were community focussed, attracting both the university students both locals and international and the members of the community. In Kenya he got involved in curriculum development for the music program at St Paul’s University, a program that he pioneered.

    My thesis is to be converted to a book. It is on Music and reconciliation. It explores issues that led to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and how music helped in the liberation and reconciliation process (2022)
