Profile

Dr. Emmanuel Souza is a Malawian academic and researcher. He holds a Ph.D in Demography from the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) in the United States and a Master of Philosophy in Demography from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Dr. Souza joined the University of Malawi in 2013 after working with the Ministry of Local Government as a Management Information System Officer for close to 6 years. His bachelor of Science (BSc) undergraduate degree was obtained from the University of Malawi at Chancellor College, majoring in Computer Science and Demography. Dr. Souza's research interests include fertility and HIV, migration (including immigrant incorporation and remittances), family demography (especially union formation and dissolution), research, and demographic methods. Between 2020 and 2022, he worked as a Population Data Fellow with UNV, supporting UNFPA's efforts to build capacity in civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) in developing countries. This work centered on the quality and completeness assessment of registration data and statistical data adjustments for incomplete or deficient registration data.
